I stand where the question gets answered, and I watch the machine choose whose words to speak. GEO is how you earn a place in that sentence: be the clearest, most trusted voice on your subject, and the answer will carry your name — even to those who never reach your door.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the work of making your business the source an AI reaches for when it writes an answer. Where traditional search hands back a list of links for a person to choose from, a generative engine — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI answers, and their kin — reads across many sources and composes a single reply in its own words. GEO is the craft of making sure your facts, your framing, and your name are part of what it composes.

This is a different game from ranking. An engine does not need to send anyone to your website to use what you published; it can absorb your expertise and speak it back to the user directly, often without a visible link. Being 'number one' matters less than being legible and trustworthy enough that the machine lifts your answer rather than a competitor's. The prize is no longer the click — it is the citation.

Winning here rewards clarity over cleverness. Engines favour content that states a claim plainly, backs it with specifics a machine can extract without guessing, and is corroborated elsewhere — in reviews, forums, and reputable publications that mention you. Original data, direct answers to the exact questions people ask, and a clean, well-structured site all raise the odds of being quoted. Hidden tricks and keyword padding do the opposite; the systems are built to see through them.

For a business owner, GEO reframes what visibility even means. Your customers are increasingly meeting you inside an answer they never clicked to reach — and if that answer names a competitor instead, you may never know the introduction happened. The task is no longer only to be found, but to be the version of the truth the machines choose to repeat.
